Video Calling in Dubai and the UAE: What Works for Meeting People (2026)
Calling rules in the UAE are different. Learn which video call apps work in Dubai, which are restricted, and how to meet new people respectfully and safely.
Dubai is one of the most international cities in the world, and most people here are far from home. That makes video calls essential, but the UAE regulates internet calling, so not every app works the way it does elsewhere. This guide explains what to expect and how to meet new people respectfully and safely.
What works and what does not
Rules and network behaviour change, so treat this as a starting point and test on your own connection. According to recent traveller guides:
- WhatsApp: messaging, photos and voice notes work; voice and video calls are generally blocked.
- FaceTime: audio and video calls are generally blocked.
- Zoom and Microsoft Teams: generally work for calls.
- Botim: a licensed calling app that works with a paid plan.
In-app video calls in dating and social apps may or may not work depending on your network. Test with a short call before planning anything around it.
Respect local law and culture
- Keep conversations respectful; sharing or requesting explicit content is a serious offence in the UAE.
- Do not post or share photos of other people without their permission.
- Public displays of affection can cause problems; keep first meetings friendly and low-key.
Protect your privacy
- Many residents worry about employers or family seeing their profile. Use privacy settings and avoid photos that show your workplace.
- Stay inside the app until you trust someone, rather than moving straight to WhatsApp.
Meeting safely in Dubai
Meet in a busy, public place such as a café in a mall, Dubai Marina Walk or Downtown, at a reasonable hour. Arrange your own taxi or metro ride. In an emergency in the UAE, call police on 999 or ambulance on 998.
Using Meetoxx
Meetoxx is free on Google Play. Every profile confirms a phone number by OTP, messaging has no paywall, and you can video call inside the app without giving out your number. Read more on our free video call app page.
