Ghosted on a Dating App? What It Means and What to Do

One day they were asking about your weekend, the next they vanished. Ghosting in online dating is common and rarely about you. Here is how to read it, the one message worth sending, and how to protect your time.

Eleven days. Imagine waiting that long after a fifty-minute video call that ended with "same time next week?" No reply to your follow-up, no unmatch, profile still active. You start wondering if your joke about Kolkata traffic landed badly, or if you laughed too loudly.

You had not done anything. They had simply stopped. That is ghosting in online dating: a conversation that was going somewhere ends without a word, and the person left behind has to write the ending themselves. That part hurts far more than losing someone you met online three weeks ago.

This article is about what ghosting usually means in the Indian context, the single follow-up worth sending, what not to do afterwards, and how to arrange your dating life so that being ghosted costs you very little.

Ghosting in online dating versus slow replies

Before anything else, check whether you have actually been ghosted. Indian schedules are brutal and uneven. Someone on a rotating shift at a hospital or a call centre, someone travelling to their hometown for a wedding, someone whose phone broke: none of these are ghosting.

Signs it is a slow patch, not a disappearance:

  • They told you earlier they would be busy, travelling or at a family function.
  • Their replies were always slow, just slower now.
  • They have been quiet for two or three days, not two or three weeks.

Signs it is ghosting:

  • Replies were quick and warm, then stopped completely after a call, a meeting or a specific topic.
  • They are posting on social media while your message sits unanswered.
  • A follow-up from you has gone unanswered for a week or more.

Why people ghost, in India specifically

Knowing the likely reason will not get you a reply, but it does stop you inventing one at 2 am.

  • The family got involved. A parent saw the phone, a sibling found the app, or a rishta the family had been pushing suddenly got "fixed". Many people here do not feel they can say "my parents have finalised someone else" to a person they met online, so they say nothing.
  • They were talking to several people. This is a very common reason and the least personal. Someone else progressed faster, and they did not have the courage to close the other chats.
  • A topic scared them off. Caste, religion, salary, whether you would move cities, whether you would live with parents. In India these come up early and they end things quietly.
  • They lost their nerve before meeting. Talking online is easy; meeting means it becomes real. Some people retreat right before the first meeting and feel too embarrassed to explain.
  • Logistics. Shift changes, exam season, a transfer, a parent in hospital. Some of these people return a month later with an apology.
  • They were never genuine. A fake profile, someone collecting attention, or someone who got what they wanted (photos, flattery, a dinner).

Notice what is not on the list: your laugh, your joke, your weight, your English. Ghosting rarely happens because of one thing you said; it happens because the other person had something going on and chose the lazy exit.

The one follow-up worth sending

Send exactly one message, three to five days after their last reply, and then stop. The point of this message is not to get them back. It is to make it easy for them to close the loop, and to let you walk away knowing you did your part.

Keep it light, give them an easy out, and do not mention how long you have waited.

English

  • "Hey, haven't heard from you in a bit. If things have changed on your side, no hard feelings, just let me know so I'm not left guessing. Take care either way."

Hinglish

  • "Hey, kuch din se koi reply nahi aaya. Agar aapki taraf se kuch badal gaya hai to koi baat nahi, bas bata do taaki main guess na karti/karta rahun. Dono case mein take care."

If they reply with a no, thank them and move on. If they come back with an excuse and warmth, decide whether the excuse is plausible and whether you want to spend another week finding out. If there is no reply in another week, that is your answer. Unmatch so the chat stops staring at you.

What not to do after being ghosted

  • Do not call or WhatsApp a number they gave you. Moving to a second channel after silence on the first is exactly the behaviour that gets people blocked.
  • Do not find them on Instagram or LinkedIn. Even a view notification reads as pressure.
  • Do not send a long message explaining how you feel. You will regret it by morning and it changes nothing.
  • Do not ask mutual contacts to find out. In a small town or a tight community this becomes gossip within a day, and it will be about you.

If you are the one about to ghost

Be honest: most of us have done it. Next time you feel the urge to go quiet, send one of these instead. It takes thirty seconds and you will feel lighter for it.

English

  • "I've enjoyed chatting but I don't think this is going anywhere for me. Didn't want to just disappear. Wish you the best."

Hinglish

  • "Baat karke achha laga, par mujhe nahi lagta yeh mere liye aage jaayega. Bina bole gayab hona theek nahi lagta tha. Aapko all the best."

Our post on how to say no politely has more templates for each stage.

Set things up so ghosting costs you less

You cannot stop other people from vanishing, but you can arrange things so that when they do, you lose an evening rather than a month.

  • Video call before you invest. A twenty-minute call in the first week tells you whether the person is real and whether the conversation flows. On Meetoxx the video call is built into the app, so you do not have to hand over your number to find out.
  • Keep your number to yourself until after a meeting. It keeps the conversation in one place and makes walking away clean for both of you.
  • Do not put everything on one person. Talk to two or three people at a time until you meet someone and agree to focus. This is not playing games; it is the normal pace of looking.
  • Fix a meeting within two or three weeks, or move on. Long online-only chats are where ghosting thrives.
  • Check for verification. A profile with a verified badge (on Meetoxx that means the person submitted a government ID) is far more likely to be a real person. It does not stop ghosting, but it does reduce the fakes.
  • Report, do not just unmatch, if the person asked for money or photos before disappearing. The trust and safety page explains what happens after a report.

When ghosting is actually good news

Sometimes a disappearance is the best outcome. If the person was pushing for photos, getting irritated when you were slow to reply, hinting at money, or already hiding you from their life, their silence has saved you a longer, messier ending. Treat it as the filter working.

People who ghost habitually tend to ghost again at harder moments, like a serious conversation about family. Someone who cannot type "not for me" after three weeks was going to struggle with "I'm not happy" after three years. You did not lose a partner; you lost someone who would have been difficult.

FAQ

How long should I wait before I decide I have been ghosted?

If their pattern was quick replies and it has been a week with your follow-up unanswered, treat it as over. If they warned you about a busy period, give it two weeks. Beyond that, waiting is just hope.

Should I unmatch or block someone who ghosted me?

Unmatch so the chat stops showing. Block only if they behaved badly before disappearing. There is no need to make a point; they are not going to see it.

They came back after a month with an apology. Do I give them another chance?

You can, with a condition: fix a video call or a meeting within the week. If the apology comes with vagueness and no plan, you are being kept as a backup option.

Is it ghosting if we only exchanged four or five messages?

No. Early chats fizzling out is normal and nobody owes a closing note at that stage. Ghosting is about disappearing after real investment: calls, meetings, plans made.

Why does ghosting hurt so much when I barely knew them?

Because your mind fills the silence with the worst explanation and makes it about you. A clear no gives the brain a reason; silence leaves it searching. That is why sending one follow-up and then unmatching helps: it gives you an ending, even if they would not.
